To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not, rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common--this is my symphony.

A View Within A View

Did you know there are many different types of photography? I'm not talking about b/w vs. color or portrait vs. landscape or macro and still life.
I'm talking about things like pinhole photography, which uses a box with a hole it in to allow light in. The images have a unique look and there is actually quite a cult following for pinhole users.
HosterĂa de Alcala
Then there is a whole photographic community built around toy cameras. The holga is considered the offspring of the diana camera of the sixties. One of the most famous pictures taken with a toy camera was by David Burnett when he snapped a picture of VP Al Gore on the campaign trail. The toy camera can add a dreamy quality to photographs that is hard to replicate with a regular digital camera.
Venice Beach.
There are many actions and post processing techniques around that are used to give a regular photograph the same 'look' of the toy camera image.
With the new advances in technology pictures snapped on the fly with your cell phone can have some pretty amazing results. There are many, many flickr groups dedicated to cell phone photographers and with good reason.

People can be super creative and combine different modes and methods to come up with some fun and unique images. Slightlynorth is a man in Washington state who not only has a really awesome photoblog of images from just his iphone, but he also has a set of images on flickr that I found to be pretty cool. He uses both an instant camera with a digital to create what he calls an almost see through affect with his photographs.
A few of my favorites...

What neat stuff people come up with! It makes me realize how much there is to do with photography and I think it's the reason that after almost a decade of picture taking I'm still in love with the art form.
